Smart USA has a nice Facebook campaign going, that involves users and is balancing on the verge of Facebook’s restrict competition rules. We have seen flipbooks from VW and smart before, and an AXE comic novel, where users could vote on how the story would continue.
Now smart combined those two techniques into one co-created flipboard, calles “Tage Your Own Adventure”, that uses the Facebook photo gallery to tell an interactive story about … an alien invasion, dinosaurs and cavemen. With a nicely drawin comic, the story gets going by holding down the left arrow key, what makes you flip through the images. At the end of each chapter users are called upon to vote on what the story of the next chapter should be.
Already experience with other examples, also the smart piece doesn’t flow smoothly for the first time, since the imgage have to be loaded. That’s where the idea gets its little hiccups.
You voted for smart to hide in the cave! To watch the conclusion of his adventure, click the first image in the album, then keep tapping the right arrow key on your keyboard to see the story animate before your eyes. If the images are loading slowly, run through the album twice.
See for yoursef in this screener how bad the user experience can get (for the first time, whithout the images being in the browser cache):
Beside the stories that are somewhat entertaining, there are a few images where we actually see something like a product info or a connection between the stories and the product. We learn that when a dinosaur tries to bite your smart, you’ll be all fine, because the “tridion safety cell withstands 9,000 lbs of force“.
Another interesting bit is that it plays with the promotion guidlines of Facebook, where it clearly says that functionalities are not supposed to be used as a voting mechanism.
Promotion does not use Facebook features or functionality, such as the Like button, as a voting mechanism.
All in all it’s a nice piece to look at, even it has some minor and major issues that limit the user experience.
