Most of the world's successful companies follow one simple rule: they bring their goods and services directly to consumers, rather than waiting for consumers to come to them. Now, Zipcar is following suit by bringing its car reservation service to Facebook.
Zipcar knows that most of its subscribers --around 88% -- are also Facebook users, and chances are good that they spend at least a portion of their day in Zuckerberg World. Given that overlap, launching a Facebook app makes perfect sense for Zipcar and its client base. According to the company's chairman and CEO, Scott Griffith, "Zipsters manage their lives on both the information highway and the paved ones. With today's launch of the 'Reserve a Zipcar' Facebook application we're enabling new levels of fun and convenience to members who no longer need to leave the Facebook environment to make a vehicle reservation."
To try it out, you can vist the "Reserve a Car" tab of Zipcar's Facebook page. Click the "Let's go" button to see what vehicles are available in your area and to put one on hold. If you need to extend or cancel that reservation, you can do that through the app too.
Naturally, since this is a Facebook app, you can share details of your Zipcar adventure on your Facebook wall. You can also leave feedback on the app when you're done.
