Chevrolet has been working hard to build buzz for the all-new Sonic among younger buyers. First came the "Let's Do This" campaign, which sent the Sonic on a bungee-jumping adventure, and now Chevy is giving away 27 of the subcompacts in cities across the U.S., using the geolocation service, SCVNGR.
The contest is called the "Chevy Sonic Adventure", and the gist is simple: participants sign up in teams of two at ChevySonicAdventure.com. Contestants need to submit the usual name/email address info, as well as a short essay about "your greatest car story" (limit 750 characters, please) and another explaining "why you and your Team member wish to participate in this Contest and why you would like to win the prize" (limit 500 words).
After completing the entrance exam, participants will take part in a scavenger hunt. They'll follow clues delivered by either the SCVNGR app or text message, directing them to particular locations, where they'll complete various challenges. Doing so earns points for the team, and at the end of the contest, the team with the most points wins a 2012 Chevy Sonic.
Regular readers might recall a similar contest launched by back in January to tout the Nissan Juke. That event, however, was centered in cities like New York and Los Angeles, none of which are involved in the Chevy Sonic Adventure. In fact, most of the sites involved in this event are in the South and Midwest, and many -- like Duluth, Minnesota and Greensboro, North Carolina -- seem slightly off the beaten path for car promotions. That should give the Sonic more exposure in those markets and help it compete against the likes of the Ford Fiesta.
